Board sizes and thicknesses: a simple guide
Choosing the right board thickness affects strength, weight and cost. Here is a practical guide for common furniture parts.
Common sheet sizes
The most common sheet size for MDF and many melamine boards is 2440 × 1220 mm. Some melamine boards are produced in larger formats. Always check the size of the board you choose before planning large parts such as tall wardrobe sides.
Typical thicknesses and their uses
- 3 to 6 mm: backs of cabinets and drawer bottoms
- 8 to 12 mm: light panels, small drawer sides and decorative backs
- 16 to 18 mm: carcasses, shelves, doors and drawer fronts, the standard for kitchens and wardrobes
- 25 mm and above: worktops, thick shelves and heavy-duty parts
Shelves and sag
A long shelf in 18 mm board can sag under heavy load. For shelves longer than about 80 to 90 cm carrying books or heavy items, use a thicker board, add a middle support, or add a stiffening strip under the front edge.
Doors
18 mm is the usual thickness for doors. Very tall doors may need extra hinges or a door straightener to stay flat.
Mixing thicknesses
It is normal to use 18 mm for the carcass and a thinner board for the back. Make sure the cutting list shows the thickness of every part.
