How to write a cutting list a factory can cut without questions

A cutting list is the list of every part you need, with its size, material and edges. It is what the factory uses to price, optimise and cut your job.

What every line needs

• Part name, for example side, shelf, door or back
• Length and width in millimetres, length first
• Quantity
• Board type and thickness, for example melamine 18 mm
• Colour code
• Edges to band, and the band thickness

Grain direction

For wood decors, the length of the part should follow the grain. Say clearly if a part must run with the grain, so doors on the same unit look continuous.

Group by colour and thickness

Put parts of the same colour and thickness together. This makes optimisation easier and reduces mistakes.

Common mistakes

• Mixing centimetres and millimetres
• Forgetting the thickness of the edge band when sizing parts that must fit tightly
• Not marking which edges are visible
• Writing width before length on some lines and not others

Simple format that works

Part, Length, Width, Qty, Thickness, Colour, Edges. A spreadsheet, a clear photo of a handwritten list or the export from your design software are all fine.
