PVC edge banding: thickness, colour and why it matters

Every cut board has an open edge. Without banding, moisture enters the core and the board swells. That is why edge banding matters as much as the board itself.

Why PVC

PVC edge banding is flexible, durable and resistant to moisture and everyday knocks. It comes in a very wide range of colours and wood grains that match melamine decors, so the edge looks like part of the board.

Choosing the thickness

• 0.4 to 0.8 mm for inside shelves and hidden edges
• 1 to 2 mm for doors, drawer fronts and edges that are touched daily

Thicker bands take more impact and allow a softer rounded corner, which is why they are used on the visible edges of kitchens and wardrobes.

Matching the colour

For plain colours the band is matched to the board. For wood decors the band follows the colour and grain direction. A small sample of the board helps us choose the closest match.

What makes a good edge

A clean, machine-applied edge with the right glue, trimmed flush, with rounded corners and no gaps between the band and the board. This is done on an edge banding machine, not by hand.
